It is three weeks since Woking Borough Council accepted a public petition and a motion from Councillors calling for a more measured redevelopment of Woking Football Club.

However, despite the passage of time, Ward Councillors and the South Woking Action Group have heard nothing from the Council Leadership, the developers GolDev and the Football Club. Which is why Lib Dem Councillor for the area, Will Forster, has written to the Council's Chief Executive calling for the Council to keep its promise to listen to residents that signed the petition. Councillor Forster has also called for the Council to facilitate discussions between GolDev, the South Woking Action Group and Woking FC.

Lib Dems expose delays in Woking's landmark development

Following scrutiny by Lib Dem Councillors, Woking Borough Council has confirmed that the Victoria Square development is behind schedule and the new Marks and Spencer store will now not open until 2021.

The Borough Council has previously stated that Marks and Spencer, the anchor store of the £540 million landmark Victoria Square development, was meant to be fitted out in Spring 2020 and opened in Autumn 2020. Following questioning at the recent Overview and Scrutiny Committee, the Council's Chief Executive confirmed that he expects Marks and Spencer to be opened nearer to March and April 2021. Ray Morgan said that the delay is due to the unexpected rebuilding of the Red Car Park.

Last week, Surrey County Council announced it is intending to move County Hall from Kingston to Woking.

The County Council has been looking to move out of its current home for sometime and has now selected Midas House in Woking as its preferred new headquarters.

The current County Hall is expensive to run, not fit for purpose and not in Surrey. However, the Council is only moving its Civic Heart to Midas House - only Councillors, the senior leadership team and some other staff will be based at Midas House. Other staff currently based at County Hall will be relocated to offices in Leatherhead, Guildford and Reigate.

The decision to hold a snap General Election on Thursday 12th December brings to an end one of the most disastrous governments in generations. This is our chance to demand better for Britain, and Woking in particular.

Woking Council listens to concerns over football club plans

Following a petition from local people and a motion from Councillors, Woking Borough Council has agreed to listen to residents' concerns about plans to redevelop Woking Football Club and will now seek a more measured development.

During last week's Full Council meeting, Councillors were presented with a petition against plans announced at the end of July to build a 10,000 seater stadium for Woking FC with over 1,000 properties around it.

Woking Council fails to support vulnerable residents

The Lib Dems have called on Woking Borough Council to fully distribute money earmarked to support vulnerable people in Woking.

Central Government gives local authorities funding, called Discretionary Housing Payments, to help vulnerable residents who are struggling to pay their housing related bills. If this money is not paid out to residents by the end of the financial year, councils have to return this funding to the Government.

Surrey Council cuts night-time fire cover

The Lib Dems have criticised Surrey County Council's recent decision to take seven fire engines off duty at night, including one in Woking.

Last month, the Council's ruling Cabinet approved a 'Making Surrey Safer Plan 2020-2023', which outlines how the County Council wants to change the fire and rescue service. The plan controversially includes reducing the number of fire engines avaliable at night.
