    Liberal Democrats would double the number of forces' family homes refurbished each year and ensure that no service man or woman goes into harm's way on less basic pay than a new recruit to the police force.

    Action would also be taken on ensuring the Armed Forces have enough of the right kit through a Strategic Security and Defence Review, to take place shortly after the election.

    The Second Leaders' Debates

    This week we saw the second debate between Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown and David Cameron. Sky broadcast the debate and a variety of topics were covered including climate change, Britain's relationship with Europe and immigration. Polls following the debate were very strong in Nick's favour with three out of the five leading polling companies showing that Nick won. The other two showed him in very close second.

    An average of five polls conducted immediately after the Sky TV Leaders Election debate on Thursday night put Nick Clegg as the winner, with all instant polls showing him ahead of Gordon Brown. After the Foreign Affairs-led debate from Bristol dominated by issues like Iraq, immigration and climate change, Nick Clegg won 3 of the 5 polls on the night, building on his position after the first debate.

    Commenting on today's GDP figures showing 0.2% growth between January and March this year, Vince Cable said:

    "These figures show that the promised recovery is barely visible. There is a real danger of the UK going into a double dip recession. As people deal with their own debts and as the banks continue to strangle good British businesses by starving them of credit the recovery will remain fragile.

    A new poll has a startling finding. The latest YouGov poll added this question: "How would you vote on May 6 if you thought the Liberal Democrats had a significant chance of winning the election".

    The responses: Lib Dem 49%, Conservative 25%, Labour 19%.

    On the assumption of uniform national swing, there would be 548 Lib Dem MPs, 41 Labour MPs and just 25 Tories.

    The second Party Leaders Debate is taking place this Thursday starting at 8pm on Sky News. Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown and David Cameron will again be going head to head in a TV debate in the run up to the General Election on May 6th, this time leading on Foreign Affairs.

    The first half of the 90 minute Election Debate on Sky News will be devoted to Foreign Affairs, with the rest on any topic. The debate comes from Bristol, and will be chaired by Adam Boulton.     We will invest an extra £2.5bn in schools through a Pupil Premium that will raise funding for the poorest pupils to private school levels.

    The money will be targeted at schools taking on children who need more help, but will benefit every child in every school. The cash can be used to cut class sizes and provide one-to-one tuition or catch-up classes, ensuring every child gets the individual attention they need.

    Commenting on the IMF's recommendations that banks and financial institutions should pay a bank levy and a further tax on profits and pay, Vince Cable said:

    "The IMF's report confirms what the Liberal Democrats have long been arguing - that a banking levy should be introduced.

    "Many of the banks are still unwilling to acknowledge the massive debt they owe the taxpayer and that they are still underwritten by our money.
