    We heard speeches from Floella Benjamin, Simon Hughes MP, John Leech MP and Gordon Birtwistle MP on how incredibly important it is that we win the Fairer Votes referendum.

    As Nick Clegg has already argued, this is "a battle between reformers and conservatives" and this is our chance, our one opportunity for genuine electoral reform. By winning this referendum we can end the nonsense of safe seats for life and ensure that MPs work harder to win your votes. We can ensure that there will be no more wasted votes and that your vote will count no matter where in the country you live.

    Speaking at the launch, Liberal Democrat Party President and Chair of the Liberal Democrat Yes to Fairer Votes campaign, Tim Farron said:

    We have a medieval voting system that has failed.

    It's failed to give most people the MP they voted for, it's failed to hold MPs to account, it's failed even to do the one thing it was supposed to be good for - you know, delivering a majority single party government!

    "John Healey is clutching at straws today as his arguments simply don't stack up. Scaremongering by telling lies about hung parliaments and how the BNP will benefit, shows just how desperate the No to AV campaign is.

  • Huhne calls for report on implications of nuclear situation in Japan

    "We take this incident extremely seriously even though there is no reason to expect a similar scale of seismic activity in the UK. I have called on the Chief Nuclear Inspector, Dr. Mike Weightman for a thorough report on the implications of the situation in Japan and the lessons to be learned. This will be prepared in close cooperation internationally with other nuclear regulators.

    "It is essential that we understand the full facts and their implications, both for existing nuclear reactors and any new programme, as safety is always our number one concern."
