A personal message to the voters of Horsell and Goldsworth Park from John Doran.

I was very proud to serve as the Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Horsell between 2005 and 2009. And now I am proud to be the candidate under the new boundaries for Goldsworth East and Horsell Village. As some of you will know I was opposed to the Coalition between 2010 and 2015 and ended up leaving the party. I was highly critical of the party and especially Nick Clegg at the time, and in many ways I was vindicated in 2015. However many of my colleagues genuinely believe that the Lib Dems had little choice but to enter the coalition in 2010, and that the behaviour of the Tories since the 2015 election has demonstrated the civilizing effect the Lib Dems had on the Coalition Government.

I believe my opponents may try to use my criticism of the Coalition against me in this campaign. I can assure you however that I am 100% behind Tim Farron and the current Liberal Democrat policies;

  • We believe the people of the UK should have a say in whether the final Brexit deal is acceptable, particularly if it means we are out of the single market and the economic downturn that will cause.
  • Only the Lib Dems have a coherent policy for dealing with the crisis in Social Care which is causing Surrey County Council so much grief. Our Health spokesperson Norman Lamb is proposing a cross-party working group to find solutions and prevent the social care crisis impacting the NHS.
  • Norman is a also a great champion of improving mental health services in the NHS. A mental illness is just as worthy of treatment as a physical one.
  • The Lib Dems believe in having sustainable transport networks and will do all in our power to preserve and improve our bus, cycling and railway network. One of my key roles, should you elect me, will be to ensure that Surrey uses its powers to control roadworks so we never again experience the gridlock we have had in recent months.
  • I will support local residents if they feel a 20mph limit is needed especially near schools. A great Lib Dem policy.

In short I am proud to be your Liberal Democrat candidate in this election and I will work hard for all the residents of Goldsworth Park and Horsell.
