Commenting, Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece said:

"Equality under the law and equal opportunity are at the heart of Liberal Democracy. The preamble to the Liberal Democrat constitution states 'Upholding these values of individual and social justice, we reject all prejudice and discrimination based upon race, colour, religion, age, disability, sex or sexual orientation and oppose all forms of entrenched privilege and inequality'.

"Our party has a proud history of involvement in the fight against racism. Many party members joined the Liberal Democrats and our predecessor parties in order to play a part in this aspect of the party's work. This commitment must be carried on at every level of the party, locally and nationally. 37 years have passed since the 1976 Race Relations Act came into being - outlawing racial discrimination in every public service and setting up the Commission for Racial Equality - but race discrimination remains a problem in modern Britain. This motion, and the Race Equality Task Force Report, focuses on education and employment.

"If we want to build a fairer society free from discrimination we must redouble our efforts, because just as there can be no freedom without equal opportunity, so there can be no real opportunity without a decent education."
