Woking Liberal DemocratsCommenting, Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge and member of the Home Affairs Select Committee, Julian Huppert said:
"The British tradition of policing by consent is incredibly valuable and a beacon for policing across the world. When something goes wrong, a robust independent commission to investigate complaints against the police is vital for public trust and support to maintain our great policing tradition.
"The Independent Police Complaints Commission has done valuable work but is limited by its scope at times. That is why Liberal Democrats want to expand its remit and powers so that its investigations can be more robust when necessary.
"With the expansion of private security contractors for police and custody services, the IPCC should be able to investigate complaints against their staff and operations and enforce minimum standards in the same way as they do for the police."
