Government should promote access to affordable and healthy food

• A National Food Strategy on sustainable and healthy food production and consumption
• Food and food skills to be included in the school curriculum
• Universal uptake of the 'traffic light' colour-coding system for nutritional labelling
• A levy on plastic bags, with proceeds to go to community food initiatives.

Commenting, Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Party Committee on Environment, Andrew George said:

"Liberal Democrats believe that government should promote access to affordable and healthy food and empower people to make the right choices for themselves and their families.

"A National Food Strategy should lay out how the Government will create a sustainable and healthy supply of food for all and introduce teaching of food and food skills in the curriculum.

"Working with local businesses, local authorities, health providers and schools, we can help people make the right decisions and lead healthier lifestyles."
