Norman Johns - Local Campaigner

Norman Johns

Councillor Norman Johns

Norman has lived in Old Woking for 12 years. He is a committed "green" having won the Green Garden award in the Woking in Bloom Competition twice and is a dedicated cyclist.

Having served in the London Fire Brigade for 42 years rising to Senior Fire Safety officer level, Norman has succesfully been achieving results on local issues for residents. These include the resurfacing of the J & J steps pedestrian route, sewerage, flooding and the conservation of the nature area, both in White Rose Lane.

Woking Nature Reserve

Currently he is working on many issues for residents.

Four examples are-

  • Getting the pedestrian crossing across the Heathside Rd by the United Reform Church and the junction improvements on Heathside.
  • Pushing Thames Water to solve the two remaining awful sewerage smell areas on the Old Woking Rd and White Rose Lane.
  • Representing the residents in Lavender Road and Sandy Lane to prevent the lorry traffic for the St Peters Convent site Apartment Block from being brought onto the site via the these narrow busy residential routes. The Woking Council Enforcement team have ensured that the developer stopped his illegal lorry movement down Sandy Lane, by setting out the financial consequences of future movements. Norman made a point of checking the site situation on 23rd January and noted that contractors lorries were entering the site from the Maybury Hill.

  • Working to get the SCC to resurface the potholed Heathside Rd pavement, where a resident has already fallen and broken her arm.

Land End To John O'Groats

Norman and friends cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats in September 09 raising over £1,500.00 for the M.S.Support centre in Guildford. Carrying all of their essentials in panniers, they stayed in hostels over night and averaged 75 miles a day to cover the 1,031 miles in 15 days. Since returning Norman has brought a coveted "End to End" cycle shirt and addressed a school assembly at the Park School about the trip.

Crisis at Christmas

The 23rd December saw Norman in central London for 6 days working as a Chef for the Crisis for Christmas charity. For more than a decade now his Christmases have been spent in a loaned building getting 200-300 meals prepared each day.

Potholes

The Surrey County Council spokes persons statement as the snow began to melt, gave me cause for concern.

As soon as I had returned from a 6 day stint as a Crisis for Christmas Chef caring for the homeless and those in very poor accommodation in central London.I made a point of reporting some 16 instances of serious potholes in the local South Woking Roads. To then hear a radio announcement by the SCC "that the numerous Potholes were a result of freezing snow damaging cracks in the roads",was a gross misrepresentation of the truth.Further more ,I note that a really deep pot hole [repaired since the snow melted]on my cycle route to central Woking,is fast breaking up due to a poor repair or the use of poor materials.
