WHAT HE HAS ACHIEVED
During his 8 years as a Councillor for Kingfield, Westfield and Barnsbury Derek has succeeded in campaigning for pedestrian crossings on both Westfield and Kingfield Roads. It took 6 years of constant campaigning to get Bonsey Lane resurfaced. Now his 7 year campaign to create an access to the Westfield Surgery through the Club on Westfield Road has been agreed.
Derek believes in tackling antisocial behaviour by providing better youth facilities. He has campaigned successfully for more and better Play Areas and is delighted with the new Multi Use Games Area on Bonsey Lane. The Hoe Valley Flood Alleviation Project has been a focus of Derek's attention for much of his time as Councillor. He has served on the Planning Committee for 8 years specifically to ensure that the Community Huts on Westfield Avenue would be demolished and rebuilt bigger and better in a more accessible location.
Derek asked the YMCA to help him open a Young People's Drop in Centre on Barnsbury. That is now open two evenings a week and is run by Woking Borough Council. He has created two informal Football Pitches on Bonsey Lane Rec. and Westfield Common, specifically for the local children, and has organised free coaching. This year he is arranging for free coaching to be provided by Woking Football Club Coaching Staff, starting at Easter and continuing through the school holidays to the end of October. This will be supplemented by courses on Self Esteem, Confidence and Healthy eating to be held in St Mark's Church Hall. This initiative is supported by both the Police and WBC.
