Thursday night was a disappointment for the Liberal Democrats both nationally and locally; however this was probably felt by all the main parties, there being no overall winner in Westminster. A graphic demonstration of how dysfunctional our electoral system is with us gaining votes but losing seats, 23% of the vote getting us a mere 9% of the seats.

In Woking, we did win a record share of the vote at 37.4% (up from 33.1% in 2005), due in no small measure to the immense hard work of many local supporters. It was sad that we lost Norman Johns from the Borough Council but it was great to gain a seat in Byfleet from the Tories. Congratulations to Barnabas Shelbourne and the Byfleet team. It is good to see Ann-Marie Barker back on the Council, having successfully defended Richard Sanderson's seat in Horsell West; good also to welcome Liam Lyons onto the Council; Liam defended Sue Smith's old seat in Mt Hermon West. Thanks to Richard and Sue for all their work on the Council and for the Party over the years.

I would like to thank all of you for the unbelievable support I have received throughout the constituency during the last few years.

As I write this, the outcome of the balance between the Parties is still uncertain, but it is true to say, as I did in my Press statement at the start of the campaign that Britain is about to renew politics. 2010 has undoubtedly been a landmark election.

So, a time now to rest, reflect, renew and come back re-invigorated.
