Rosie Sharpley Condemns "Unfairness" of Tory Tax Plans

January 20, 2010 1:59 PM

Rosie with Vince CableRosie Sharpley the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Woking today criticised the Tories' marriage tax proposals as being yet another example of unfairness by giving tax breaks to the well off while penalising ordinary working couples.

Giving tax breaks to married couples where one person can afford to stay at home, but doing nothing for couples who both have to work is unfair.

Is it really fair that a working single parent would pay more tax than their ex spouse, who has left and re-married?

This policy ultimately takes money out of the pockets of the poorest families and gives it to rich ones.

The Tories' first instinct is to help those at the top, that's why they can't be trusted to make this country fairer.

I know of many hard working families in Woking who are single parents or not married. Many are struggling in the current economy, yet the Tories answer to this is to tax them more than married people. Bizarre. Vince Cable has put forward a new, fully costed Liberal Democrat policy to raise the tax threshold from £6,475 to £10,000. This would remove 4 million of the poorest from paying tax, and would add £700 per year to the average persons pay packet. Now that's fair.
