Governments can't continue to blow hot and cold on climate deal - Hughes

November 17, 2009 8:00 AM

Rosie with Simon HughesCommenting after Barack Obama and other world leaders said that time has run out to secure a legally binding climate deal at Copenhagen, Liberal Democrat Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Simon Hughes said:

"After more than a decade of climate negotiations, it is simply unacceptable that Governments continue to blow hot and cold about their intentions for Copenhagen.

"The filibustering of big carbon should not prevent an urgent and binding deal that places strenuous demands on all countries, especially those with a historic responsibility for emissions.

"A framework deal in Copenhagen would not be a disaster if it is the necessary price to avoid a weak agreement.

"The requirements of both science and justice demand urgent action from world leaders. Any hint of a plan to wriggle out of a binding deal until late next year is a cause for great concern."

Rosie Sharpley comments : "Most people have got the message that we are running out of time and that urgent action is needed in respect of climate change. It is with disbelief that they now note that the big hitters are dragging their heels. There is a march in London on 5th December and I hope as many people as possible will turn out so that the message comes through loud and clear"
