Lib Dem Shadow Chancellor Visits Woking

December 12, 2005 6:45 PM

The Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable MP, spoke to a packed audience at Sutton Green Golf Club recently. The former Chief Economist for Shell said that whilst the UK had done reasonably well, the signs of potential economic problems were becoming clearer. In particular the increasing national debt and the pensions crisis worried him.

He met with tough questioning from the local businesswoman, Sue Kittelsen, about the amount of increasing regulation for small businesses, and responded that he believed the way the UK 'gold-plated' rules and regulations was causing unnecessary distress and difficulties.

Mr Cable said he was pleased that the Chairwoman of WAVS, Cllr Di Landon, took the opportunity to bring to his attention the likely effect of government proposals on the voluntary sectors. At the end of their conversation Cllr Landon warned him "more centralisation of the voluntary sector will come at the cost of local support".

Dr Anne Lee, parliamentary spokesperson for Woking Liberal Democrats said "people were queuing up to speak to Mr Cable. We also discussed the difficulties that the increase in student fees is posing, and the great difficulty that there may be in getting European students to pay back their UK debts.

"We were pleased that he led such a wide-ranging debate, we also took the opportunity to brief Vince on the environmental progress with combined heat and power units, solar heating and the fuel cell in the park that Woking has made. We wanted to make sure that he takes this positive information back to colleagues in Parliament".
