Woking Lib Dems Adopt Anne Lee

April 10, 2005 9:00 AM

Woking Lib Dems adopted Dr Anne Lee as their candidate for the General Election at a packed meeting in the Maybury Centre on April 9. Guildford's MP Sue Doughty who ended a long history of Tory MPs at the last General Election was present to wish Anne well. She said that Woking's position strongly resembled Guildford's four years ago, and that today both the Tories and Labour were weaker than they had been then.

In her acceptance speech Anne Lee said that the Local Party had never before approached an election in such a well planned and co-ordinated way. Since the Election was called on Tuesday almost every house in Woking had received a full-colour leaflet. Teams were active in every single County Council ward, talking with voters to convince them that Woking's next MP would be a Liberal Democrat.

Woking's efforts were greatly improved by an outstanding performance by Charles Kennedy and his front bench team on TV. Quoting Peter Riddell in 'The Times' (5th April 05), Anne Lee said: "Charles Kennedy is seen as more principled, as saying what he believes, and honest about what he would do in comparison with the other leaders".

Anne Lee ended her acceptance speech with a rallying call to the enthusiastic activists present: "The time for planning is over, the time for delivering a victory for Woking is here!"
