Charles Kennedy answers questions at Woking College from members of the School Council

"I think politics would be much better if more senior politicians would answer questions just like this" Rt Hon Charles Kennedy M.P., Leader of the Liberal Democrats said when he was asked if he was nervous about confronting 150 pupils at Woking College. Students from a number of local schools and Woking College itself listened to him explain why the Liberal Democrats were concentrating on issues such as free tuition for students, free personal care for the elderly and safeguarding the environment for future generations.

Questions came thick and fast from all the students. They included asking about his policy on Iraq, how he would handle George Bush, education, adoption and same sex marriages.

Mr Kennedy took straw polls on many of the issues debated, and observed that the results were similar to those found in a recent Guardian poll which said that more students support the Liberal Democrats than any other party.

Dr Anne Lee (Woking Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson) asked students to keep her in touch with their views. She said "it is important that politicians keep their feet on the ground, and I need you to tell me what you think is important, so that I can continue to represent your views to people like Charles Kennedy". She also thanked the staff at Woking College for all their support in organising this event.
